For 15 years, Swedish quintet Darkane have combined melodic death and technical thrash to stirring effect, and as their new album “The Sinister Supremacy” proves, they’re just getting started. It marks not only the first Darkane album in five years, but also the return of vocalist Lawrence Mackrory, the man who delivered a memorable performance on the group’s 1999 debut, “Rusted Angel”.

Darkane was formed in January 1998 from the ashes of Agretator, a thrash metal band hailing from the Swedish costal city Helsingborg. Inspired by the aggression, speed, and technical finesse of At The Gates, guitarist Christofer Malmström, drummer Peter Wildoer and bass player Jörgen Löfberg joined forces with longtime friend and guitarist Klas Ideberg, formerly of thrash act Hyste’riah, to form a new band. After attracting the attention of local metal label War Music the band recorded “Convicted” and “July 1999” for the “Wardance” compilation with vocalist Björn “Speed” Strid filling in on vocals. Due to conflicting commitments with Soilwork, Speed’s duration in Darkane was short. Nevertheless, the friendship between Soilwork and Darkane would remain long lasting. Malmström and Wildoer kept busy and continued writing throughout 1998, eventually composing enough material for a full-length release.

Bio

Melnitsa (Мельница, Russian for windmill) is a Russian folk rock band. It was founded in 1999 by Natalia “Hellawes” O’Shea and Alexey “Chus” Sapkov around the remnants of a local folk band ‘Till Eulenspiegel’.

The band fuses Russian, Irish and other North European folk influences with guitar pop/rock. Natalia “Hellawes” O’Shea, the lead singer and primary songwriter, is an academic and a specialist in medieval European languages and cultures by day. Her expertise lends the typically complex fantasy-laden lyrics a degree of authenticity.

For the first several years the band had worked the club and festival circuit, earned a bona fide cult status in the folk-n-fantasy teenage sub-culture and released an acoustic album Doroga Sna (Дорога Сна, The Road of Dream) featuring the underground hit Gorets (Горец, Highlander) set to the Russian translation of Robert Burns’ Highland Harry Back Again.

Luck struck in 2005, when the lead single Nochnaya Kobyla (Ночная Кобыла, Night mare) off their second, more pop-infused album Pereval (Перевал, Mountain Pass) had been sneaked into rotation on Nashe Radio (the name and lyrics of the song are a complex allusion to Mara, a Norse mythical entity that caused nightmares). A grass-roots chart effort by fans propelled the song to No. 1 position in the “Best Of Year” chart, and the band to the small arena circuit (sparsely populated in Russia).

Their latest albums Zov Krovi (Зов Крови, Call of Blood) and Dikiye Travy (Дикие Травы, Wild Grasses, released early 2009) features the same lyrical and melody themes underscored by more rhythm section support from the band.

Century Media 2013.
Metalcore from Germany.

Postproduction: Julian Topehlen

Info

Formed in 1997, CALIBAN is one of the few German bands who managed to build up an international status in recent years. In North America they toured with labelmates God Forbid, The Red Chord, I Killed The Prom Queen and many more and also stopped at North American Festivals such as Hellfest (Syracuse) and New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. They toured Japan with Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall, played the Beast Feast as well as visited Indonesia, Malaysia and last, but not least Australia as part of the Gigantour with Megadeth, Soulfly and Arch Enemy. Apart from several headline runs they were part of numerous European tours with bands such as In Flames and Devil Driver, Machine Head or Kreator. Also, it doesn’t come as a surprise that you could watch CALIBAN on countless European festivals such as With Full Force Festival (D), Graspop Metal Meeting (B), Summerbreeze (D), Rock am Ring/Rock im Park (D), Wacken Open Air (D) as well as the prestigious Nova Rock (A) and Download Festival (UK). Recently they supported Machine Head and their acquaintances Killswitch Engage on selected shows.
