Anti-Flag : “Toast To Freedom”

ANTI-FLAG RAISES A “TOAST TO FREEDOM”;
PUNK ICONS UNITE WITH AMNESY INTERNATIONAL FOR EXPLOSIVE VERSION OF NOW-CLASSIC ANTHEM.

Progressive punk rock icons Anti-Flag have joined forces with Art For Amnesty to release an electrifying version of “Toast To Freedom,” the now-classic commemorative song written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International. The track — inspired by the imprisonment of Russian activist punk band Pussy Riot — went on sale in Europe and the rest of world (without USA and Canada) – (USA and Canada on February 12th) via the iTunes Store and all leading DSPs. All net proceeds benefit Amnesty International.

The track’s genesis began in July 2012 at Anti-Flag’s Berlin concert benefitting the three then-jailed members of Pussy Riot — Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich. Among the audience that night was longtime music industry executive, activist, and entrepreneur Jochen Wilms. In 2011, he and his friend Bill Shipsey conceived and co-executive produced the original all-star Art For Amnesty Band rendition of “Toast To Freedom” and had since seen their brainchild become an organic worldwide phenomenon, with diverse artists from all over the globe creating their own unique interpretations.

Long active in the worldwide struggle for human rights, Anti-Flag quickly agreed to record their own take on “Toast To Freedom.” Not three months later, the Pittsburgh-based band hit Berlin’s historic Hansa Studio, accompanied by a roster of special guests that included Billy Talent guitarist Ian D’sa, Bernd Kurtze (of Berlin punk heroes, Beatsteaks), and Münster’s own DIY favorites, Donots.

With Wilms producing, Anti-Flag and Co. reveled in Hansa Studio’s extraordinary history, even going so far as to use the same microphones employed by David Bowie and Brian Eno when recording “Heroes” back in 1977. The result is the most intense and exhilarating rendition of “Toast To Freedom” thus far, a loud and powerful rallying cry sure to activate audiences everywhere.

Kerosin, “Власть народу!” (“Power To The People!”), Punk´n´Roll from Moscow city.

Bio

The ancestors of the founders of the punk’n’roll style in Russia, KEROSIN skillfully combine the energy of punk with the melody and ease of early rock and roll and rockabilly, drawing inspiration from both the songs of rock’n’roll heroes (Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Johnny Burnette, etc), and of classical punk (Ramones, The Clash, Iggy Pop, Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion, Rancid, Misfits, etc). Topics range from the lyrics of funny stories to social and rebellious subjects, as well as the universal problems of love, friendship, loneliness, and the struggle for themselves, their freedom and their opinions.

Six months after the formation of KEROSIN in 2008, the band received an offer from Europe to record a split with punk’n’roll group Mean Idols, who had previously toured Russia with the Misfits. An album “Kerosin / Mean Idols: Split!” was released in mid-2009 on the independent label Rumble Fish Records and received distribution to 14 Russian cities and nearby countries of the CIS (Estonia, Finland, etc.)

They also worked with the Russian producer and filmmaker, Olga Stolpovskaya (winner of numerous film awards including the New York film award of 2004 for Best Foreign Film) to write a popular hit “Cold” (together with the leader of the group Cockroaches, Dmitry Spirin Sid) and have also taken part in a Russian tribute band to Motorhead.

In March 2013 they released their second album “20 13”, comprising 12 songs in Russian and one cover song. They also completed a tour of Russia to present the album in more than a dozen cities and at the end of May, KEROSIN presented their new album at the festival “Rock Park” in the company of groups such as The King and the Clown, Louna and Project Rockstar (super-group of musicians Alice Cooper, Scorpions, Judas Priest). A second Russian tour is planned for September/October 2013.
